Giants hammer Chiefs, but Manning injured
KANSAS CITY – Eli Manning is the man in the drivers seat who steers this current juggernaut team that is the Giants, so anytime he experiences even the slightest of tweaks, it is a cause for concern.
On Sunday, the team’s franchise quarterback went back to throw and when he did not feel right, limping with an injury reminiscent of other quarterbacks in years past.
Manning’s injury put a damper on the Giants 27-16 dumping of the Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium, completing a perfect three game road trip to begin the season 4-0. It was another complete performance from a group arguably the deepest in the entire league.
At 4-0, they now return home to Giants Stadium to facing the woeful Oakland Raiders. Whether they will have their starting quarterback behind center will be something that will be a big story during the week.
On the opening kickoff, Chiefs returner Jamaal Charles returned to the 20 before CC Brown hit him, forcing a fumble and Bryan Kehl recovered at the Chiefs 16 yard line, giving the Giants prime field position.
It took only five plays for the Giants to cash in, on second-and-goal from the Chiefs 3, Manning on a play-action fake found Steve Smith in the middle of the end zone for a touchdown to quickly take a 7-0 lead.
The Chiefs would attempt to give their fans some hope later in the quarter when Tamba Hali sacked Manning and forced the fumble that Glenn Dorsey recovered at the Giants 36. This led to an eventual 34-yard field goal by Ryan Succop to make it 7-3.
Moving the ball efficiently as they have done the previous weeks, the Giants drove down to the Chiefs 21 when Manning’s pass to Mario Manningham was thrown slightly behind him, ricocheted off his hands and was intercepted Brandon Flowers.
For Manningham, the drive saw some of his best and worst all within a few plays. He dropped a first sure first down early and in the drive, and two plays later nearly dropped another deep ball down the right sideline that he wound up holding onto for a 43-yard gain.
The defense forced the Chiefs to a three-and-out and capitalized on their next possession with the help of a key penalty. After a 15-yard reception to Travis Beckum and an 11-yard run by Ahmad Bradshaw, Manning’s pass over the middle to Smith was incomplete as safety Jarrod Page was called for a 15-yard unnecessary roughness penalty for leading with his helmet. On the next play, Smith would haul in his second touchdown of the game on a 25-yard strike to go ahead 14-3.
Smith finished the game with a career high 11 receptions for 134 yards and two touchdowns.
With 1:49 remaining in the half, the Giants started from their own 13 and drove it down to the Chiefs 7 before settling on a 25-yard field goal from Lawrence Tynes for a 17-3 lead at the break.
Another Tynes field goal from 40 yards up the lead to 17, but would miss his third field goal in as many weeks as his 38-yard attempt was just off to the right.
The Giants would put the game away early in the fourth quarter, but it was also mark the end of Manning’s day. On second-and-nine, he dropped back and tried to find Smith on a deep ball down the left sideline, and pulled up lame. Manning was not contacted, but he began to limp gingerly.
He would stay in for the next play and clearly favoring the injury, Manning threw a swing pass to the left that was caught by the returning Hakeem Nicks, who used his shifty feet and was able to take the ball 54 yards for a touchdown to make it a 27-3 game.
Manning was unable to celebrate the play as he was clearly favoring his leg as he limped back to the Giants bench. The trainers would examine his foot and he did not return for the remainder of the game as backup David Carr came in. It was diagnosed as a bruised heel and will be evaluated on Monday by the team’s medical staff.
The Chiefs would score two touchdowns late to make the score respectable, but no one should be fooled by the way the way the Giants physically dominated the game to the tune of a 429 to 193 discrepancy in yardage, 107 of those coming after the game was legitimately decided.
After two weeks of hearing about the lack of a running game, the Giants ran for 156 yards, as the Chiefs had no answers to stop any facet of the New York attack. Manning finished 20 for 34 for 292 yards and 3 touchdowns.
